Use Food to Boost Your Mood
Most of us have been taught to think that comfort foods are bad and to be avoided. Often, if the comfort food is a high sugar food or another junk food, this is true. Otherwise, comfort foods may be really nourishing and good for you. Some foods actually do elevate your mood when you consume them. If you seem to feel a little bit down and you're in need of a happiness pick me up, try some of these.
Eggs, believe it or not, are fantastic for helping you combat depression. Just be sure that you do not throw away the egg yolk. The egg yolk is the part of the egg that matters most in terms of helping raise your mood. Eggs, the egg yolks in particular, are loaded with B vitamins. These B vitamins are fantastic for helping to boost your mood. This is because these vitamins improve the function of your brain's neural transmitters (the parts of the brain that dictate how you feel). Try eating some eggs to cheer up!
Make a few trail mix of nuts or seeds. Almonds, cashews, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, and so on are all helpful for improving your mood. This is possible as these foods are rich in magnesium which raises your production of serotonin. Serotonin is called the "feel good" substance that our body produces and it tells your brain how you should be feeling at all times. The higher your serotonin levels, the better you will feel. Not only that but nuts, particularly, are a fantastic protein food source.
Cold water fish are great for eating if you want to combat depression. Cold water fish like tuna, trout and wild salmon are high in DHA and omega-3 fats. DHA and omega-3s are two things that truly help the grey matter in your brain work a lot better. It's true: eating a tuna fish sandwich can seriously elevate your mood.
Grains can be wonderful for fighting a bad mood. Millet, quinoa, barley, etc are terrific at helping you feel happier. They help you feel full too which can truly help to better your mood. It's easy to feel low when you feel famished! The reason these grains help your mood so much is that they are easy to digest. You digest these foods quicker than other things which can help promote your blood sugar levels, which, in turn, helps make you feel more pleasant, mood wise.
Your mood could really be helped by green tea. You were sure it had to be in here somewhere, right? Green tea has a lot of an amino acid referred to as L-theanine. Studies have shown that this amino acid basically induces brain waves. This helps raise your mental acuity while having a relaxing effect on the rest of your body. You likely already knew how easy it is to be healthy when you drink green tea. Now you know that applies to your mood too!
See, you don't need to eat all that junk food when you are wanting to feel better! Try some of these suggestions instead.
