David Livingstone – The last adventure in the life of this influential explorer
By 1867 it seemed that David Livingstone had all but disappeared. For a few years since his leaving ten years prior to that, the reports were sent to England, telling of his voyage through central Africa. The world had learned of his personal catastrophe years earlier, Mary Livingstone had died from the fever. After her death David had gone North near the Rovuna river. He wanted to come to Lake Nyassa. He believed that it would be a marvelous place to start an English colony. The land there was moistureless and healthy and the lake offered fresh water. On 16 September 1859 David and his group of close friends came to the waters of admirable Lake Nyassa. He sent messages to England telling them to deliver people to form a colony. He then went to Tette, where he had a jubilant homecoming with his Makololo friends. They went back to Linyanti.
When David returned once again to Tette, England's reply to his letters was waiting for him. The first pack of workers had arrived on a light steamer called the Pioneer. They went back to Lake Nyassa. Then David left the missionaries and travelled north to the city of Zanzibar. Here the slave trade was the grievous of all. David rented a light ship and sailed south again. On foot, all the villages that he passed were depleted and scorched, the people had been victimized by the slave traders. They went up North again, food was running low and David's medicine chest was stolen. Without medicine David suffered regularly with fever. David needed to reach Ujiji, an Arab settlement on the east shore of Lake Tanganyika, about three hundred miles west of Lake Nyassa.
Meanwhile England newspapers wondered if David Livingstone was lost, or dead? News reached America. An American man went to find out what had happened to David Livingstone. He arrived in Ujiji with two hundred native porters wearing packs. Oxen pulled wagons crammed with bundles. The American recognized David Livingstone, he was weak, his clothes hung loosely on him.
An American, Gordon Bennet, publisher for the New York Herald, wanted to know what had happened to David Livingstone, the pioneer of the Victoria Falls. So he dispatched Henry Morton Stanley to find him. Stanley brought provisions for David, and letters from his children. He stayed for over four months. The two became familiar friends. After Stanley left, David went on a final campaign.
He desired to find a river called Laupula, which was said to be the commencement of the Nile River.
They didn't make it, in Chitambo's village near Molilamo David Livingstone died. It was 4th May 1873.
In Westminister Abbey, in London where he is buried you can find a headstone with the following words:
Brought by faithful hands over land and over sea. Here rests DAVID LIVINGSTONE, Missionary Traveller, Philanthropist. Born March 19, 1813, at Blantyre, Lanarkshire. Died May 4th, 1873, at Chitambo's Village, Ilala. For thirty years his life was spent in an unwearied effort to evangelize the native races, to explore the undiscovered secrets. And abolish the desolating slave-trade of central Africa, where, with his last words, he wrote: "All I can say in my solitude is, May heaven's rich blessing come down on every one - American, English, Turk - who will help to heal the open sore of the world."

David Livingstone – Discovery of the renowned Victoria Falls
They travelled eastward about Lake Ngumi and there they found a wide river. It was the Zambezi river. David's offspring were ill again. He made the judgment to take his descendants back to Cape Town and direct them back to England from there. David predicted that he would need two years to find a place to settle and set it up as a home. He didn't know that it would turn out to be five years!
David and his travelling assembly went North again, and crossed the Chobe river. There they were reunited with their friends, the Makololo people. David told of his wish to open a road from the coastline into the centre of the country.
Twenty seven developing Makololo men went with David.
They decided to travel forward the Zambezi River before it turned to the east. Then they would leave the Zambezi and set off westward on the Kassai River, then north west on the Kwango river to the Lucalla River. Then it would be due west on to Loanda on the coast. It was a drawn-out and distressing journey. It took over six months and then they eventually reached the sea. David delivered his journals back to England by ship. In all his travels he had drafted about places, people, the land, the rivers, the mountains and the slave trade. His facts would later affirm esteemed to the world in understanding much of the land then called the 'Dark Continent'. His recorded accounts would do a great deal to end the slavery in the world. He saw the waterfall Mosi-Ao-Tunya and named them Victoria Falls after his queen on 17th of November 1855.
They started back to Linyanti. They came into Libonta, the first village of Chief Sekeletu, as heroes. The chief was animated to hear that they had found a way to the west coast. David explained that it was a long distressing way and that he wondered if it would be better if they travelled near the Zambezi river. Chief Sekeletu sent David out again. This time he sent him with 120 men. Sekeletu himself joined them.
They travelled along the Chobe river to where it met the Zambezi River. It was March 1856. They came to Tette an inland Portuguese spot on the Zambezi River. They were about 300 miles from the coast.
David was very weak. A commander of the Portuguese army stationed in Tette took him into his home to sleep. When he was able-bodied enough he settled his Makololo friends on plantations to be employed until his reappearance, and he went to the port city of Quilimane where he boarded a ship for home.
David reached London on the 9th of December 1856. The family celebrated Christmas together for the first chance in five years. In the sixteen years that he had been apart England had made him a hero. On account of of his journals and written accounts about him, his home country had not abandoned him. His written accounts on the slave trade had stirred up an anger within the nation and the whole world, against the corruption of slavery.
David travelled over eleven thousand miles of African territory. In his exploration he had made exacting recordings of the land. His existence was now filled with speeches to Universities, instruction to scientific groups, happenings with government officials, invitations to social gatherings and even an invitation from the Queen of England. He was made an honorary doctor of sciences by the university of Glascow. And he wrote a book. In February 1858, he had been given an approved commission as Her Majesty's Consul at Quilimane for the Eastern Coast and the independent districts in the interior, and commander of an expedition for exploring eastern and central Africa. He needed to find a healthy place, high in altitude, in central Africa where missionaries could develop natives to be teachers and preachers. He needed to open routes for business.

David Livingstone – The young missionary and his dramatic vision.
David told the executives of the missionary society that he intended to go to Africa, they agreed to send him. On the dawn of November 17, 1840, 27 year old David Livingstone bade so long to his father on the Broomielaw quay in Glascow and boarded his waiting ship, the George. He would at no time see his parent again. The ship George sailed about the Cape of Good Hope and into the bay of Algoa, where the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet. Here is where David landed and began the lengthy journey inland. David and his company travelled on foot and horseback with an ox cart to bring their equipment. The days were blisteringly scorching and the nights clear and cold. They slept beneath stars huddled in blankets. They came to the village of the Kuruman, where Robert Moffat lived. Robert was not home, he was back in England on a visit. Kuruman had before been arid and empty, but now it was replete with fruit trees and gardens. Robert Moffat had been a greenskeeper before he became a missionary. David stayed only long enough for the oxen to get well and rest. The people here labeled themselves the Bakwena the "people of the crocodile."David waited for six months for word from the missionary society in London. He learned the language and way of life of the Bakwena. David directed the people about God. He also helped the people irrigate the land. At length the letter came. This excursion took him to the people labeled the Mabotsa "people of the monkey" where he helped them obliterate a lion and got hurt in the shoulder which would at no time cure in all.
David stayed in Mabotsa for a continued time. The villagers helped him build a brick building and he lived with them and directed their children. His friend Robert Moffat mailed word that he was returning to Kuruman. So David went to meet him. It was then that he met Mary, Robert's eldest daughter. Soon they were engaged. Mr. Moffat had been born in Africa and knew well the duties and hardships of missionary life. It took some time to lay the groundwork for the marriage ceremony, have a residence completed and assign for a marriage license from England.
The village had a marriage dinner for David Livingstone and Mary Moffat when Mary arrived.
David and Mary perceived that the time had come to move on, they packed all of their personal property and moved up north to a village of Chonuane, forty miles to the north. David built a school and another stone house. They had their first offspring here, a son. They called him Robert after Mary's father. It was a very moistureless place, and when it came time to move on the local people went with the Livingstones. They settled in a place that they called Kolobeng. They built a school, irrigated and introduced gardens and stayed there for several years. Mary and David had two more descendants, Thomas and Agnes.
David and his family then travelled on to Lake Ngami. They desired to reach "the land of many rivers" but travel was distressing and the children were often not healthy because of the hard living surroundings. Little did David know that he was about to discover the Victoria Falls.

David Livingstone – The early years of this grand explorer
Born on March 19, 1813 in the small town of Blantyre in Lanarkshire, David Livingstone was to live his life for others, his own contentment and satisfaction was selflessly sacrificed to encourage others less experienced of overcoming adversity than himself. He was born to Neil Livingstone, an impoverished tea merchant. He was trained to read and write by his father. When David was 10 he went to work in the Blantyre cotton mill, his post was to watch a cotton spinning frame and fasten any threads that broke.
David desired to understand more and self studied whenever he could. He soon began to be coached at nights after work, provided by the mill. He taught himself Latin and formed a love of natural history. He was also well-built physically, he loved to tramp for miles and miles all over the country. He grew up strong and with great energy. Little did he realise that he was accidentally preparing for his life's work, and to be immortally remembered in history as the man that discovered the Victoria Falls.
At eighteen he was promoted to the capacity of spinner at the mill, thus earning much better compensation. He hoarded his money for university. He was driven to study to a doctor and a missionary. He had read about a doctor missionary in China and hoped that he too could go to China and be like that man. He was accepted at the university in Glascow, Scotland. He wrote a letter to the London Missionary Society offering himself as a missionary to China while he was still studying at the University. He was confirmed on the condition that he went through a foundation course at a school in Chipping Ongar in Essex near London, England. He delayed his course and accomplished a year at the mission society. During the time he was at the little school he met a man named Robert Moffat who was to give him his life's vision. Robert Moffat had just returned from Africa with stories that fuelled the heart of David, of a magical continent with the "vast plain to the north" and the "smoke of a thousand villages" where no missionary had ever been in the past.
He moved to London in 1940 to accomplish his studies at the British and Foreign medical school, the Aldarsgate Street Dispensary, Charing Cross Hospital and Moorsfeild Hospital and at the closing of the year he qualified as a licentiate of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glascow. That aforementioned year he was also ordained a missionary by the London Missionary Society.

The Victoria Falls – Further famous as ‘The Smoke That Thunders’
General Knowledge for Victoria Falls:
Also known as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders). It is situated in Southern Africa on the Zambezi River between the countries of Zimbabwe and Zambia. They are the biggest falls in the world. One of the seven natural wonders of the world the falls were named after Queen Victoria by David Livingstone, a missionary and explorer who was believed to have been the first European on record to have viewed the falls in 1856 and then made it known to England. He initially saw the falls from an island known as Livingstone Island in Zambia. And though it is neither the highest nor the widest waterfall in the world it is celebrated as the largest.
Victoria Falls Water Flow:
The flow of water varies remarkably from season to season. Just after the rainy season in March or April the volume going over the falls in one minute is around half a million cubic metres, but in the dry season occurring in December it can be less than a twentieth of this. The advantageous time to view the falls is conceivably some time between these two extremes as when the falls are in abounding flood one cannot get close to them in safety. They are notwithstanding spectacular when not in full flood in that they are not obscured by the spray.
David Livingstone believed that the falls had been introduced by some great crack in the earths crust in the far-off past. Geographic attestation now shows that the present chasm is the eighth in a succession which has worked it's way upstream over many many years.
Formation of the Victoria Falls:
The falls have a width of 1708 metres and a height of 108 metres. This forms the largest layer of falling water in the world. For quite a way upstream from the falls, the Zambezi river flows over a sheet of basalt in a shallow depression bound by sandstone hills. The rivers flow is dotted with many little islands that swell in number as the river gets toward to the falls. There are no mountains, deep valleys or escarpments that would be expected to create a waterfall. There is only a broad flat plateau.
There is an ample chasm, carved by the water into the plateau wherewith the water from the river takes a single vertical drop over a 1708 metre wide area and plummets into a gorge. The depth of the gorge, called the First Gorge, is 80 metres deep on the western end and 108 metres deep in the centre. An outlet to the First Gorge, the only one is a 110 metre wide aperture about two thirds of the way across the width of the falls from the western end, through this outlet, the complete volume of the river pours into the Victoria Falls gorges.
The Islands of The Victoria Falls:
At the crest of the falls there are two Islands. Boaruka Island (or Cataract Island) near the western bank and Livingstone Island near the center. Livingstone Island is the place from which David Livingstone had his first impression of the falls from Zambia. These islands are big enough to divide the curtains of water, even at full flood. When it is less than brimming flood other islets divide the curtain of water into separate streams. The main streams are called Devil's Cataract (known as Leaping Water to some), Main Falls, Rainbow Falls and Eastern Cataract.
Rainy Season in The Victoria Falls:
The rainy season is from late November to early April and the dry season is for the rest of the year. The Zambezi river's annual flood season is from February to May with the maximum in April. The spray from the waterfall rises anywhere from 400 metres to 800 metres high and can be visible from as far as 50km away. During the day a daylight rainbow can be seen and during a full moon a moonbow can be seen in the spray. In the flood season the fine mist shoots upward like inverted rain especially at Zambia's Knife- Edge Bridge. During the dry season the ground of the first gorge can be seen.
Victoria Falls - Largest Waterfalls:
Victoria Falls is approximately double the height of the Niagra Falls in North America and well over double the width of the Horseshoe Falls. The only rival in height and width by South America's Iguazu Falls.
The entire amount of the Zambezi river pours into the First Gorge. After this it enters a zigzag route of a course of gorges. Water entering the Second Gorge makes a clear right turn carving a deep pool labeled Boiling Point. It is about 150 metres across. It is named Boiling Point because although it's surface is smooth and quiet at low water, it is full of angered turbulence at high water.
The Gorges of The Victoria Falls:
The First Gorge is the one that the Zambezi river falls into at Victoria Falls. The Second Gorge which is spanned by Victoria Falls Bridge is 2.15 km long. The Third Gorge is 1.95 km long and contains the Victoria Falls Power Station. The Fourth Gorge is 1.15 km south and 2.25 km long. The Fifth Gorge is 2.25km south and 3.2km long. The Songwe Gorge (called after the Songwe river) is 5.3km south and 3.3km long. The Batoka Gorge is about 120km long taking the river into the basalt plateau to the valley where Lake Kariba now lies.
The walls of the gorges are nearly vertical and approximately 120 metres high.

Hazyview accommodtion close to the banks of the formidable Sabi River.
After re-watching the vintage movie, 'Out of Africa with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep', I submitted to a flashing desire to hit about in the thicket and so an African Safari for me began. With various Hazyview accommodation places attainable; I picked one on the Sabie River that seemed to show off hippopotami. Hippo Hollow is a captivating three star hotel enfolded in indigenous bush a mere 10 minutes separating the Kruger National Park. With its rural thatch cottages on the river and its swimming pools, it was classic as a base camp. And usefulness for this task was clear-cut right from the start.
Directly next door is an awesome place named Elephant Whispers which is a hideaway for four acclimatized elephants that were rescued from considered culling exercises. Here I got to concentrate some time with each elephant in an intercommunication interval where I shook trunks and touched their bumpy skin. Then as an additional gift I climbed aboard one of these exalted animals and looked at the world from a fine place. My Out of Africa occurrence had begun.
It seemed that nature was determined on gripping me right from the beginning, by reason of as I sat feeding on my evening meal on the porch at the Hippo Hollow eatery, two Hippos by chance walked past! I was mesmerized, here were these colossal animals grazing as I too grazed. Talk about living up to its name!
Being so nearby to two gates of the Kruger Park, namely the Kruger and Numbi gates, I was a hop, skip and a jump from game rides where you are for the greatest part certified on noting the famous Big Five! There were daytime rides and night rides, I engaged in the two. Seeing a pride of lions was one of the highlights of my tour, as who can look at them and not think of Lion King. The grace of these extensive cats is something you have to catch a glimpse of in person. Dolefully I never saw the leopards but the buffalo were in abundance, slowly making their way from water hole to water hole. It was all so breathtaking I could not keep from taking a helicopter ride, and as it happens one takes off from our excellent Hazyview accommodation. So in the air I went, camera convenient as we swept past Lisbon Falls, water declining down a 92m cliff into an icy blue pool. Then the Mac Mac falls, a little scaled-down but no less stunning. The vista was awesome and to finish it off you get to gaze the best view of Mpumalanga that is God's Window, words cannot distinguish.
And there was still so much extra to see and do. An hour away from our Hazyview suite is a Chimpanzee resort where I got to see free chimps that have been rehabilitated living in their natural environs. From strategically placed observance points I watched them forage, act and associate or simply dally about. It was prodigious to see what exhausting work on behalf of the Jane Goodall Institute and Kingsly Holgate can accomplish in securing these animal's continuation. Really was worth the trip out.
Back at the Hippo Hollow, I got to luxuriate in my last evening with a traditional Shangaan spectacular. Cuisine and dance was presented to us in full African flavour by the locals and even their Chief. I felt like a VIP and partied like a rock star with a superb option of local wines.
So finished my "Out of Africa", a quick 20 minute drive to the airport and I left with memories that I will cherish forever. My reminders; in the form of photographs that will sustain this experience for descendants to come.
Foregoing a suspect start, measuring the affordability of a swarm of Hazyview Accommodation options and alternatives, I blissfully stumbled on Hippo Hollow. The accommodation was grand and the directors and staff made me feel like royalty. This establishment is a blend between a hotel and a safari lodge, which is specifically what I was watching for.

Knysna Accommodation surrounding the reputable occurring Knysna Oyster Festival
I was decidedly privileged last year to be able to be present at the Knysna Oyster Festival. What an action packed trip! We arrived in this stunningly positioned little coastland town and were instantly taken by its allurement and radiance. The Knysna Forest to the back is fascinating, and the trail run through the Featherbed Nature Reserve, dodging ancient Milkwood trees and rocks encompassed by the luscious greenery, was astounding. And there was still so much additional to do as this week long festival is jam packed with events and races.
Knysna accommodation at this period of year puts their best foot forward and we accommodated at an alluring place named Knysna Hollow which is situated right bordering the lagoon. We took one of the garden chalets encircled by forest and nature for the term of our break. This Knysna accommodation is well advocated, the staff and accommodations are first-class, the owners sociable and invariably favorable to serve. A little village in itself, we spent various meals first at the Rutland Arms Pub based in the old Manor house, chucking back a few pre-dinner beverages prior to making our way to the Knysna Hollow Restaurant for a full a-la-carte meal. This place's position is so near all the bustle that it is barely a hop and a skip to join the things to do on Thesen Island where we got to watch the Lagoon conests.
The Navy made an enrollment into the week's events advancing in through the Knysna Heads and we covered all the adventure from a little survey point at the summit of the Heads. Bring your hoodies though; the weather is fluctuating but added to the adventure with mists and clouds. After that there is nothing better than a lukewarm beverage or a bottle of wine, and by chance the wine sampling and oyster shucking is an event that cannot be missed, the local estates bring their select for you to discern and enjoy. The oyster eating competition was wild, chaos prevailed as oysters were opened and slurped down in attempts to defeat opponents. For me it was exceptional to watch, but not to partake in. There are so many things happening at this celebration that you really have to plan well. One of the things that I intensely enjoyed observing, was the adrenaline packed Waterfront Rush. Three long days of entrants competing against the clock in and above water was so much excitement. The finals interested so many people that I recommend you get there without delay or be all set to muscle your way in to see. But nevertheless it was amazing, the frenzy is infectious even though I had no idea who any of the competitors were.
After the lunacy of the event we headed back to our cozy Knysna accommodation and escaped at our new neighborhood pub. The Hollow is also really nicely positioned that we could try a little extra of the Garden Route and we made our way to a few attractions nearby inclusive of a breath taking tree top canopy tour and a little tour to an elephant reserve where we witnessed the massive beasts themselves. And then to complete our experience we went to the legendary Cango Caves just outside Oudtshoorn. This area with its vast halls and substantial towers of dripstone is something like out of Lord of the Rings and merits the hours drive. Furthermore we got to see ostriches on our trip there, these extremely large birds are a hoot and there are even little races held at some of the farms.
In whole our little recess in Knysna was one to be memorized, from beginning to end, an action packed spectacular that everyone should examine once in their lives.
If there is one event that stood out in my entire encounter I would have to announce that it was the Knysna Accommodation. The backdrop and the keen interest of the team and owners at Knysna Hollow Country Estate was exclusive. I was pleasingly surprised by my accommodation since the financial plan I had to work inside, the comfort of the resort was superb, while still classy. The facilities were all well maintained and each thing was clean and fresh. This business has my approval.
